European Union regulators said Friday that they are taking more time to examine Nokia s plans to acquire U.S. digital mapmaker Navteq. The European Commission extended its deliberations by 90 working days, with an option of taking as much as 125 days under certain conditions. The extension does not signal how the EC would ultimately rule on the $8.1 billion acquisition. The commission s initial investigation found potential problems the deal could pose to the market for navigable digital maps.
NEW YORK (AP) — Nokia Corp.’s shares rose Friday after a Piper Jaffray analyst raised his estimates for the leading handset maker’s first-quarter because of expected strong sales in China, India and Middle East Africa. Nokia’s American Depositary Shares rose 33 cents to $31.24. Piper Jaffray analyst T. Michael Walkley said he now expects earnings of 58 cents per share in the first quarter, compared with an earlier estimate for 52 cents.
NEW YORK (AP) — The European Commission is extending its review of Nokia’s buyout of digital map data provider Navteq. The regulatory commission has 90 business days to make a decision on the buyout. It can extend that period to 135 days if it chooses to do so. The companies said the extended review time “does not in any way signal the ultimate outcome” of the review. Nokia, a mobile phone maker based in Finland, agreed to buy Chicago-based Navteq for $8.1 billion, or $78 per share, in October.
